The Intramuros Administration is the 2015 recipient of the Heritage Award granted by the Association of Heritage Cities of Spain for its efforts in protecting Spanish colonial architecture in Manila.
The group said it recognises the important work being undertaken by the Philippine institution in recovering Philippine cultural heritage.
The Intramuros Administration, created in 1973, implements its projects through the Escuela Taller de Intramuros, an initiative of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and which, since its inception in 2009, has trained more than 200 marginalised Filipino youth in the conservation and preservation of their own cultural and architectural heritage, equipping them with the necessary tools to enable them to work in the sector of heritage restoration.
Intramuros is the heart and soul of Manila, founding in 1571. A significant number of historical colonial buildings were partially or completely destroyed in the bombings that devastated Manila in 1945 during the Second World War, making it the second hardest hit city after Warsaw.
