The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government officials of Davao Oriental are preparing for the expected influx of local and foreign tourists to the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (MHRWS), which was recently declared a world heritage site by the United Nation Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

DENR Regional Executive Director Marc Fragada, also the chairman of the Protected Areas and Management Board (PAMB) of MHRWs, said they are now coordinating with the provincial government of Davao, as well as the mayors of the towns of Mati, San Isidro and Governor Generoso, which has jurisdiction over MHRWS to develop the protected area’s ecotourism potential.

Mount Hamiguitan is the country’s sixth World Heritage site. The other five are Palawan’s Tubbataha Reef Natural Park and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, Rice Terraces in the Cordillera Region,as well as Spanish baroque churches in Manila, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte and Iloilo.
